How much does product photography cost in 2023?

If you are looking for a product photographer, you may be wondering about product photography pricing and what the average rates are in 2023.

Our answer? It depends!

Here are some factors that play a role in product photography pricing and how much it costs to hire a product photographer in 2023:

  1. How many products do you need professionally photographed? The number of products photographed is probably one of the most important factors in how much product photography costs. The more products you need photographed, the more likely you will have to pay because of the amount of time spent photographing them.

  2. How many different concepts are you envisioning for your product photos? By concept, we are referring to themes. For example, one theme could be of your product in a kitchen setting. Another theme could be of your product in the hands of a model on the beach. Like number one, answering this question will help the product photographer determine how much time it may take for them to effectively produce the results you are expecting. A product photoshoot that only has one concept will take a much shorter time to do than a product photoshoot that has five.

  3. What will the product photos be used for? Many people are not aware of commercial licensing and what that may mean in regards to how you can use your product photos. Under federal law, all photographers automatically have full copyright ownership of all images they take. This means that the photographs belongs to the original photographer. However, many product photographers include a commercial usage license in their photoshoots that outline how the product photos can be used by clients. Different product photographers have different commercial licensing restrictions. As the client, you will need to decide how you want to use the product images and how much you are willing to spend in order to use them in the ways that you want. For example, many product photographers include a commercial usage license that grants the client the ability to use the product images in social media and web. If the client wants to use the product images in a large marketing campaign on a billboard where profit will be gained, the product photographer may charge an additional fee for that, and in some cases, a royalty.

  4. What is the photographer’s skill level? A product photographer who is just beginning to build their portfolio will be much cheaper than a product photographer who has been photographing for several years. Determining which photographer you want to work with will depend on how much of a budget you have and the quality of images you expect. Product photographer who have several years of experience under their belt will most likely be able to provide you with images that are sharper and superbly lit, rather than a photographer who is just beginning to learn how to use artificial light. Like many professions, the more experience you have, the more likely you are to charge more for your skills.

With all that being said, product photography pricing can range anywhere from $500 to $10,000! Our suggestion would be to reach out to a few product photographers in your area, and ask for a quote. It doesn’t hurt to get multiple opinions!
